Agree on the rules before the first expense
Most fights about group money come from rules nobody agreed on. Before you start, align with everyone on:
- What belongs to the group and what is each person's: lodging, groceries and fuel are usually split; souvenirs and drinks for those who drink are not.
- How to split: equal shares are the simplest and cause the fewest arguments.
- When to settle up: at the end of the trip, at the end of the month for the house or right after the event — with a set date.
Record each expense right away, with who paid
Leaving it for later is the recipe for “I think I paid for Tuesday’s lunch”. Record each expense when it happens: the amount, what it was and who paid. The receipt helps when someone asks.
A place the whole group can see is worth more than one person’s notes: nobody has to trust blindly, and the final bill is no surprise.
Work out each person's balance
Add up all the expenses and divide by the number of people: that is each person’s share. Then, for each person, take what they paid minus their share. A positive balance means they are owed; a negative one means they owe.
Example: on a trip of three friends, Ana paid 900 for lodging, Bruno paid 300 for groceries and Carla paid nothing. The total is 1,200, so each share is 400. Ana is owed 500, Bruno owes 100 and Carla owes 400.
Settle up with the fewest transfers
Nobody needs to pay back every single expense to whoever paid it. It is enough that those who owe pay those who are owed, until every balance is zero. In the example, that is just two transfers: Bruno → Ana 100 and Carla → Ana 400.
In bigger groups, the mental math gets complicated fast — that is where a tool that does it for you makes a difference.
Pay by Pix with the exact amount
In Brazil, Pix settles up instantly and at no cost for individuals. To avoid typos, prefer the Pix copy and paste code with the amount already filled in and the key of who receives. After paying, tell the group or mark the payment as done, so nobody charges twice.
Frequently asked questions
How do I work out who owes whom on a trip?
Add up the expenses and divide by the number of people to find each share. For each person, take what they paid minus their share: whoever is negative pays whoever is positive, until every balance is zero.
What if someone did not take part in an expense?
Agree beforehand on what belongs to the group. An expense that is only one person's stays out of the group bill: whoever spent it pays alone. In Balizar the split is always in equal shares among the members of the wallet, so add there only what belongs to everyone.
Does everyone need Balizar Plus to split?
No. Whoever adds expenses to the group wallet needs Plus. Those who just follow the balances and pay their share can use the Free plan.
